Helpful Hints

What is a Confidential Blind Box?

A Confidential Blind Box allows responses to be forwarded to the advertiser from the newspaper, rather than directly from respondents. In this way, the advertiser remains confidential. This feature is often used by employers so that job seekers do not know the name or address of the employer when responding to employment ads.

What is a temporary Confidential E-mail Box?

A temporary Confidential E-mail Box allows advertisers to receive confidential e-mail messages from respondents for the term of the ad, rather than using their own e-mail address. In this way, the advertiser remains confidential.

What Contact Information is required?

All required contact fields are shown in red. Please include area codes for all telephone numbers. The telephone number associated with your credit card must be included for billing purposes. How can I write an ad that sells?

On a classified ad column, there are approximately 28 characters and spaces per line. The text entry box for ad copy is an approximation. Type your ad copy exactly as you want it to appear. The text will wrap automatically. Please do not type returns. And don't forget to include the phone number you want to have published. Here are some additional pointers:
  • First, get their attention
The first word or two in your ad should clearly state the item you are advertising: '84 Thunderbird, Collie Pup, Kenmore Dishwasher. People tend to scan classified ads looking for specific items of interest. If they have to read your whole ad to find what it is you're offering, you might both miss a good opportunity.

  • Give enough information
Your ad should provide enough information to convince the reader to act. Describe your item in terms that emphasize the benefits it offers the reader.

  • Avoid abbreviations
Use caution with abbreviations. We often assume that readers will know what is meant but they usually don't. Cryptic abbreviations might save a little space, but they will also abbreviate results.

  • Tell them how to reach you
Don't forget to tell the reader how to contact you and try to make yourself available. Many sales are lost because the advertiser was just too difficult to reach.

  • Include the price
Remember to price your items. It is required on all private party ads except garage sale ads.

  • Edit your ad
Check your copy for accuracy. Remove nonessential information and insert more benefits for prospective buyers.
